Postcard Stories:

The Black-and-White Charm of Ulster and Our Woolly Locals

Sometimes, I come across a postcard that proves you don’t need a flurry of colors to capture an incredible atmosphere. That is exactly the case with this monochromatic gem, which you can see in the photo. It depicts the raw, wintry landscape of Ulster, a historical province in the northern part of Ireland.

Looking at this picture, I can instantly feel the crisp, frosty air. The center stage is taken by a majestic, snow-dusted hill, while the foreground features the true masters of these lands—a whole flock of sheep that doesn’t seem to care about the biting cold at all. Below the image, there is a charming and very accurate inscription: "A warm welcome awaits you in ULSTER - whatever the weather!" And that is the absolute truth about this region!

Woolly Tough Guys, a Landscape from Narnia, and a Shepherd You Might Know...

While writing this card, I couldn't resist the pleasure of hiding a few fascinating fun facts on the back, all related to what you see in the image.

  • Sheep That Never Get Cold: These characteristic animals with black faces and legs are most likely Scottish Blackface or Suffolk breeds, which are incredibly popular in Ulster. Their thick, dense, and oily wool provides the perfect insulation against rain, wind, and snow. Thanks to this, they can safely stay out in the pastures all year round, becoming an inseparable part of the Irish countryside. It is often said that there are more sheep than people in Ireland—and while those numbers fluctuate, our woolly residents definitely rule the hills.
  • St. Patrick as a Sheep Herder: Did you know that Ireland's most famous patron saint has a massive connection to shepherding in this very region? Before St. Patrick brought Christianity to the island, he was kidnapped by pirates as a teenager and sold into slavery right here in Ulster. For six long years, he worked as a shepherd, tending to sheep and pigs on the slopes of Slemish Mountain (in modern-day County Antrim). It was during this isolation, surrounded by raw nature and woolly companions just like the ones in photo, that he discovered his deep faith. The landscape on the postcard takes on a completely different, mystical meaning now, doesn't it?
  • The Mountains That Inspired Narnia: The raw, rounded silhouette of the mountain in photo is the work of glaciers that carved these lands thousands of years ago. It is worth noting that these dramatic, misty, and sometimes snow-covered landscapes of Ulster (specifically the Mourne Mountains) directly inspired author C.S. Lewis to create the magical world of Narnia in his famous books!

What about you?

Do you like these raw, black-and-white landscapes with history and legends in the background? Did you know about St. Patrick's past as a shepherd? Let me know in the comments below!

Czarno-bia艂y urok Ulsteru i we艂niane „lokalesy” 馃悜❄️

Czasami w moje r臋ce wpada poczt贸wka, kt贸ra udowadnia, 偶e do przekazania niesamowitego klimatu wcale nie potrzeba feerii barw.

Przedstawia ona surowy, zimowy krajobraz Ulsteru, historycznej prowincji w p贸艂nocnej cz臋艣ci Irlandii.

Ca艂e stado owiec, kt贸re zdaje si臋 niewiele robi膰 sobie z panuj膮cego ch艂odu. Poni偶ej zdj臋cia widnieje uroczy i bardzo prawdziwy napis: "A warm welcome awaits you in ULSTER - whatever the weather!"

We艂niani twardziele, krajobraz z Narnii i pasterz, kt贸rego znacie...

Ich g臋sta, gruba i t艂usta we艂na stanowi idealn膮 izolacj臋 przed deszczem, wiatrem i 艣niegiem. To dzi臋ki niej mog膮 bezpiecznie przebywa膰 na pastwiskach przez ca艂y rok, staj膮c si臋 nieod艂膮cznym elementem irlandzkiego krajobrazu. M贸wi si臋, 偶e w Irlandii jest wi臋cej owiec ni偶 ludzi – i cho膰 liczby te si臋 zmieniaj膮, we艂niani mieszka艅cy zdecydowanie dominuj膮 na tutejszych wzg贸rzach.
Krajobraz z poczt贸wki nabiera teraz zupe艂nie innego, mistycznego znaczenia, prawda?
  • G贸ry, kt贸re zainspirowa艂y Narni臋: Surowa, zaokr膮glona sylwetka g贸ry na zdj臋ciu to efekt dzia艂ania lodowc贸w, kt贸re tysi膮ce lat temu wyrze藕bi艂y te tereny. Warto wiedzie膰, 偶e to w艂a艣nie te dramatyczne, zamglone i czasem o艣nie偶one krajobrazy Ulsteru (szczeg贸lnie g贸ry Mourne) zainspirowa艂y pisarza C.S. Lewisa do stworzenia magicznego 艣wiata Narnii w jego s艂ynnych ksi膮偶kach!

A Wy?

Lubicie takie surowe krajobrazy z histori膮 i legend膮 w tle? Wiedzieli艣cie o pasterskiej przesz艂o艣ci 艢wi臋tego Patryka? Czekam na Wasze komentarze!

Postcard Stories:

A Pint Full of... Sheep, or Irish Sense of Humor

There are some postcards you just cannot look at without a wide smile. When I saw the artwork on this card, I instantly knew it was the epitome of the local, amazing ability to not take oneself too seriously. The inscription proudly reads: "A Pint of Sheep".
Just look at this illustration – the black sheep tightly packed into the glass perfectly mimic Ireland's most famous dark stout, Guinness, while the light, fluffy, and curly heads at the very top create the ideal, thick, creamy head. Two of Ireland's biggest symbols – sheep and beer – combined into one brilliant piece of art!

A Fun Fact About "Black Gold" and the Perfect Foam

The Art of Patience, or 119.5 Seconds:

Pouring a perfect pint of stout is practically a ritual in Ireland and takes exactly 119 and a half seconds! The bartender first fills the glass to about three-quarters of the way at a 45-degree angle, and then... sets it aside. The beer must "settle" and go through the surging process of nitrogen bubbles cascading downwards, creating that dark depth. Only after this time is the pint topped up straight to the rim, creating that proud, thick head of foam (just like our fluffy white sheep on the postcard!). If a bartender serves you a stout straight away without this wait – know that they have committed an absolute pub faux pas!

What About You?

How do you like this woolly interpretation of Ireland's most famous drink? Would you drink such a "pint of sheep"? I’m looking forward to your thoughts in the comments below!

Warmest wishes,

Opowie艣ci z poczt贸wek:

Kufel pe艂en... owiec, czyli irlandzkie poczucie humoru 馃嵒馃悜

S膮 takie poczt贸wki, na kt贸re nie da si臋 spojrze膰 bez szerokiego u艣miechu. Napis g艂osi dumne: "A Pint of Sheep" (Kufel owiec).

Sp贸jrzcie tylko na t臋 ilustracj臋 – czarne owieczki ciasno u艂o偶one w szklance idealnie imituj膮 najs艂ynniejszy irlandzki ciemny stout, czyli Guinnessa, a jasne, puszyste i zakr臋cone g艂owy na samej g贸rze tworz膮 idealn膮, g臋st膮, kremow膮 piank臋. Dwa najwi臋ksze symbole Irlandii – owce i piwo – po艂膮czone w jedno genialne dzie艂o!

Ciekawostka o „czarnym z艂ocie” i idealnej piance

Sztuka cierpliwo艣ci, czyli 119.5 sekundy:

Nalanie idealnego kufla stouta to w Irlandii niemal rytua艂 i trwa dok艂adnie 119 i p贸艂 sekundy! Barman najpierw nalewa szklank臋 do oko艂o trzech czwartych wysoko艣ci pod k膮tem 45 stopni, a potem... odk艂ada j膮 na bok. Piwo musi „odpocz膮膰” i przej艣膰 proces kaskadowania b膮belk贸w azotu, kt贸re opadaj膮 w d贸艂, tworz膮c ciemn膮 g艂臋bi臋. Dopiero po tym czasie dope艂nia si臋 kufel prosto do g贸ry, tworz膮c t臋 dumn膮, g臋st膮 piank臋 (czyli nasze jasne owieczki z poczt贸wki!). Je艣li barman poda Ci stouta od razu, bez tego czekania – wiedz, 偶e pope艂ni艂 absolutne pubowe faux pas!

A Wy?

Winged Romantics, or a Visit with the Puffins

Writing out consecutive postcards from Ireland has awakened so many beautiful memories inside me. The moment this particular postcard fell into my hands, I felt my heart skip a beat. Although the photo shows the majestic, rugged island of Skellig Michael with a little puffin proudly posing on it, my thoughts instantly drifted away to another Irish island...

Not long ago, I had the immense pleasure of visiting Great Saltee Island, and that is exactly where I got to admire these extraordinary, colorful birds with my own eyes! Meeting them in person is an unforgettable experience.

Lifelong Love and Postcard Romanticism

Did you know that puffins are among the greatest romantics in the animal kingdom? These little birds mate for life! They spend most of the year alone, drifting across the open, freezing ocean. Yet, every spring, they return to the exact same spot on land to find their beloved partner.

When they finally reunite after months of separation, they greet each other in an incredibly tender way—they gently rub their beaks together, looking as if they are exchanging sweet kisses.

Doesn't that sound like the perfect plot for a romantic story worth sending out into the world via traditional mail?

How about you?

Have you ever had the chance to see a puffin in real life? Or maybe, just like me, you find their habits absolutely amazing? I can't wait to read your thoughts in the comments!

Warmest regards,

Skrzydlaci romantycy, czyli z wizyt膮 u maskonur贸w 馃惂馃尭

Wypisywanie kolejnych kartek z Irlandii obudzi艂o we mnie mn贸stwo pi臋knych wspomnie艅. Kiedy w moje r臋ce wpad艂a ta widok贸wka, od razu poczu艂am szybsze bicie serca. Cho膰 zdj臋cie przedstawia majestatyczn膮, surow膮 wysp臋 Skellig Michael, na kt贸rej dumnie pozuje ma艂y maskonur, to moje my艣li natychmiast uciek艂y w kierunku innej irlandzkiej wyspy...

Niedawno mia艂am ogromn膮 przyjemno艣膰 odwiedzi膰 Spotkanie z nimi na 偶ywo to niezapomniane prze偶ycie.

Mi艂o艣膰 na ca艂e 偶ycie i... poczt贸wkowy romantyzm

Czy wiedzieli艣cie, 偶e maskonury to jedni z najwi臋kszych romantyk贸w w 艣wiecie zwierz膮t? Te ma艂e ptaki 艂膮cz膮 si臋 w pary na ca艂e 偶ycie! Wi臋kszo艣膰 roku sp臋dzaj膮 samotnie, dryfuj膮c po otwartym, mro藕nym oceanie. Jednak ka偶dej wiosny wracaj膮 dok艂adnie w to samo miejsce na l膮dzie, aby odnale藕膰 swojego ukochanego partnera.

A Wy?

Mieli艣cie kiedy艣 okazj臋 zobaczy膰 maskonura na 偶ywo?

Postcard Stories:

The Legend of Dingle Harbor

Whenever I write postcards to various corners of the world, I always try to sneak in a little piece of Irish magic – something more than just a standard "greetings". Recently, I came across a beautiful postcard featuring the picturesque harbor of Dingle.

Looking at those colorful boats and calm waters, I just couldn't help but mention one of the most extraordinary stories this town holds. Have you ever heard of Fungie?

A Friend from the Bay Who Became a Legend

Imagine a wild bottlenose dolphin who, back in 1983, completely of his own free will, decided to make this bay his home. He wasn't kept in captivity, nor was he fed, yet for nearly 40 years, he considered Dingle his sanctuary! Fungie absolutely loved human company—swimming alongside fishing boats, playing with divers, and becoming the ultimate symbol of the entire region.

Today, you can even admire a bronze statue of him right in the town, and his memory remains very much alive among locals and tourists from all over the globe.

What about you?

Did you already know the story of Fungie, or is this the first time you've heard of him? Let me know in the comments below!

Legenda z portu Dingle

S艂yszeli艣cie kiedy艣 o Fungie’m?

Przyjaciel z zatoki, kt贸ry sta艂 si臋 legend膮

Wyobra藕cie sobie dzikiego delfina butlonosego, kt贸ry w 1983 roku zupe艂nie dobrowolnie postanawia zamieszka膰 w tutejszej zatoce. Nie by艂 trzymany w niewoli, nie by艂 dokarmiany, a mimo to przez niemal 40 lat uwa偶a艂 Dingle za sw贸j dom! Fungie uwielbia艂 towarzystwo ludzi, p艂ywa艂 obok 艂odzi rybackich, bawi艂 si臋 z nurkami i sta艂 si臋 absolutnym symbolem tego regionu.

A Wy?

Magic Bound in Thousands of Pages – The Long Room

When we think of Dublin, we often picture lively pubs, atmospheric streets, or green parks. But on one of my recent postcards, I decided to send something completely different out into the world – a place that takes my breath away every single time and makes me feel as though I’m crossing the line between reality and a fairytale.

I’m talking about a breathtaking, centuries-old library – specifically, The Long Room at Trinity College. Just look at the photo on the postcard – those soaring wooden shelves and the scent of ancient history!

Over 200,000 Treasures and... Movie Magic

This majestic room was built in 1732 and to this day shelters over 200,000 of the most precious, ancient books within its walls. Walking between these towering shelves is an incredible experience, but did you know that this place also holds a secret known to pop culture lovers worldwide?

It was the unique design and otherworldly atmosphere of The Long Room that served as a direct inspiration for filmmakers! This very library was the model for:

  • Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from the Harry Potter adventures,
  • The Jedi Archives in the Star Wars universe!

When you step inside, you honestly feel as if you’ve walked straight onto the set of a magical cinematic hit.

What about you?

Are you more Team Harry Potter or Team Star Wars? Or maybe, just like me, you simply love the smell of old books and monumental libraries? Let me know in the comments below!

Magia zakl臋ta w tysi膮cach stron, czyli The Long Room

Kiedy my艣limy o Dublinie, przed oczami staj膮 nam cz臋sto t臋tni膮ce 偶yciem puby, klimatyczne uliczki czy zielone parki.

Mowa o zapieraj膮cej dech w piersiach stuletniej bibliotece, a dok艂adnie o The Long Room w Trinity College.

Ponad 200 000 skarb贸w i... filmowa magia

Ta majestatyczna sala zosta艂a wybudowana w 1732 roku i do dzi艣 skrywa w swoich murach ponad 200 tysi臋cy najcenniejszych, starodawnych ksi膮g. Spacer mi臋dzy tymi pot臋偶nymi rega艂ami to niesamowite prze偶ycie, ale czy wiedzieli艣cie, 偶e to miejsce skrywa te偶 sekret znany wszystkim mi艂o艣nikom popkultury?

To w艂a艣nie ten unikalny design i nieziemska atmosfera The Long Room by艂y bezpo艣redni膮 inspiracj膮 dla tw贸rc贸w filmowych! To na tej bibliotece wzorowano:

 * Szko艂臋 Magii i Czarodziejstwa w Hogwarcie z przyg贸d o Harrym Potterze,

 * Archiwa Jedi w uniwersum Gwiezdnych Wojen!

A Wy?

Jeste艣cie bardziej team Harry Potter czy team Star Wars? Dajcie zna膰 w komentarzach!

Reactivation! Going back to Postcrossing and the magic of snail mail

Reactivation! Going back to Postcrossing and the magic of snail mail ✨

There are some passions that can doze off for a while, only to come back with a double force. That is exactly what happened to me over the last few days. I can officially announce: I am back to Postcrossing! I have to admit something to you – I completely forgot how much pure joy this hobby brings. That incredible thrill of excitement the moment the system draws my next recipient somewhere on the other side of the world... Who will it be? What country? What are their interests?

And then comes the second, equally exciting stage: the big hunt! Going through my collection and picking that one perfect postcard that will ideally match the drawn person's taste and bring a smile to their face when they open their mailbox.

Something more than just regular greetings

After this long break, I am rediscovering the charm of handwriting all over again. However, I quickly realized that a simple "Hello from Ireland!" is just not enough for me. I decided that each of my cards should be a mini-journey. I sneak in local fun facts, fascinating historical details, or simply extraordinary stories about places worth knowing.

What does this mean for the blog? 馃か

A wonderful plan has sparked in my mind! Very soon – as soon as the postcards I've sent safely reach their recipients – I will start sharing these stories with you here on a regular basis. I might not reveal every single word I scribbled with my pen on the back of the cards, but I will definitely tell you all about the fascinating topics that made it onto them. There will be plenty of noteworthy curiosities!

It feels wonderful to experience this paper atmosphere again. Are there any active Postcrossers among my readers? Or maybe some of you collect postcards? Let me know in the comments!

Warmest wishes,

Reaktywacja! Wracam do Postcrossingu i magii tradycyjnych kartek ✨

Dok艂adnie to przytrafi艂o mi si臋 w ostatnich dniach. Oficjalnie og艂aszam: wracam do Postcrossingu! Kto to b臋dzie? Z jakiego kraju? Czym si臋 interesuje?

A potem ten drugi, r贸wnie ekscytuj膮cy etap: wielkie poszukiwania!

Co艣 wi臋cej ni偶 zwyk艂e pozdrowienia

Postanowi艂am, 偶e ka偶da moja kartka b臋dzie ma艂膮 podr贸偶膮.

馃か

W mojej g艂owie zrodzi艂 si臋 艣wietny plan! Ju偶 wkr贸tce – gdy tylko wys艂ane przeze mnie jask贸艂ki dotr膮 bezpiecznie do swoich odbiorc贸w – zaczn臋 si臋 tutaj z Wami regularnie dzieli膰 tymi historiami. B臋dzie mn贸stwo ciekawostek wartych uwagi!

Cudownie jest zn贸w poczu膰 ten papierowy klimat. A czy w艣r贸d moich czytelnik贸w s膮 jacy艣 aktywni Postcrosserzy? A mo偶e kto艣 z Was zbiera poczt贸wki? Dajcie zna膰 w komentarzach!
